Thank you to everyone who came to RAPAR's Annual General Meeting at the Friends' Meeting House in December. Special thanks to Manjeet for chairing the meeting and to everyone who gave presentations.
Shazana from the human rights organisation CAGE spoke about "The Confession: The Story of Moazzam Begg", a documentary which tells the story of a Birmingham man who was wrongly accused of "terrorism" and detained without trial in Guantanamo Bay. After three years in the infamous detention camp, Moazzam was finally released by the US government following an international outcry. RAPAR and CAGE will jointly host a screening of the documentary. More details to follow soon.
RAPAR members Nestor, Maurice and Barly spoke about their experiences of the UK's detention process - and the ways in which the system can lead to people being unlawfully detained. Another RAPAR member Henrietta described the difficulties with housing for people seeking asylum and how these difficulties continue even after people have won their cases.
Evelyne talked about the work of Young RAPAR and Farheen ended the meeting by reading from the collection of poems she has written. Afterwards there was food made by Zeinab and music organised by Jamil in the RAPAR office.
Thank to everyone for making it such a success.
